In Japanese, ~けど and ~が are contrast markers that express a logical contradiction or opposition between two ideas. The key concept English speakers must understand is that Japanese explicitly marks the relationship between clauses, whereas English relies on context and word order to create contrast.

English typically uses conjunctions like "but," "however," or "yet" to signal contrast—but often English speakers can leave the relationship *implied*. For example, "I'm tired" and "I'll go" are separate statements that readers must connect. In Japanese, ~けど and ~が force the speaker to mark this contradiction explicitly. This reflects a fundamental Japanese communicative principle: make relationships between ideas clear and unambiguous.

Another crucial difference: English speakers think of "but" as introducing an exception or surprising reversal ("I'm tired *but* I'll go"). Japanese けど/が is broader—it marks any kind of tension, contrast, or opposition between two statements, even when one doesn't negate the other. For instance, in "彼は背が高いですが、兄さんはもっと高いです" (He is tall, but his older brother is even taller), both statements affirm tallness. The が simply marks that one statement modifies or qualifies the first. English speakers struggle here because they expect "but" to mean "contradiction," but Japanese けど/が means "here's a related but distinct point."

Furthermore, けど and が can be used in the middle of a conversation or sentence to soften a statement (more on this in intermediate lessons), showing that Japanese sees contrast not just as a logical connector but as a tone tool for politeness and nuance. This is completely foreign to English, which lacks this grammatical softening device.
