-고 (And / List)

The connector 고 is fundamentally different from how English speakers naturally think about linking ideas. In English, we use separate sentences or conjunctions like "and" to connect actions, treating each action as an equally important standalone event. But in Korean, 고 reflects a verb-stacking mindset where multiple actions are viewed as a connected sequence or list flowing toward one final main point.

Here's the key insight: when you use 고, you're not saying "I did A *and* I did B" as two separate moments of equal weight. Instead, you're saying "I did A and then B (and then C...) as one continuous sequence of events leading to something". The final verb or state is the climax or outcome of everything that came before. English speakers are used to making each action a main verb with its own emphasis—but Korean groups preliminary actions together with 고 to show they're all preliminary to the final point.

For example, "밥을 먹고 학교에 갔어요" doesn't mean "I ate rice AND I went to school" as two separate things you're reporting. It means **"I ate rice, and *then as a result or continuation of that*, I went to school"—the going to school is the main event, and eating was the natural step before it. This is why 고 is sometimes called a "sequence connector" rather than just "and". Without understanding this, learners treat it as optional or interchangeable with other conjunctions, but it's really about showing how actions flow together** toward a purpose or outcome.
