The marker 지만 is a concessive connector that links two contrasting ideas—the first idea sets up an expectation, but the second reverses or complicates it. English speakers struggle with this because English tends to *separate* contrasting statements with words like "but" or "however" that stand apart, whereas Korean embeds the contrast into the grammar itself.
Here's the crucial difference: In English, you say "I'm tired but I will go" as two independent clauses joined by a conjunction. In Korean, you say "피곤하지만 가겠어" (literally: "tired-but I-will-go"), where 지만 *attaches to the tired-ness*, making the tiredness the setup for the contrast that follows. The first part is "conceded" or "admitted"—you're saying "Yes, this is true, AND YET..." This is why it's called a concessive connector.
Why Korean structures it this way: Korean treats the first clause as a conceded fact (something acknowledged but then overridden), so grammatically it becomes dependent on the second clause for its full meaning. You're not just listing two opposite ideas; you're saying "Despite X (which I admit is true), Y happens." English speakers naturally think sequentially—"First this, then that"—but Korean embeds subordination and contrast into word order and particles.
The key insight: 지만 always means the second clause is the real point, and the first clause is the expected or obvious counterpoint. Use 지만 when you want to emphasize contrast or override expectations.
