-(으)면 (If / Condition)

The (으)면 conditional is one of the most important Korean grammatical structures, and it works fundamentally differently from how English speakers typically think about conditions.

Why Korean uses (으)면 instead of English "if": English "if" statements often sound hypothetical or uncertain—"If you study, maybe you'll pass." But Korean (으)면 expresses a direct cause-and-effect relationship: "When you do X, then Y happens." This is more about natural consequence than speculation. The speaker assumes that the condition *will* be met and focuses on what *naturally follows*. This reflects a Korean mindset of deterministic logic—one action logically produces another result.

The key difference from English thinking: In English, we separate conditions from results with a hypothetical tone. In Korean, (으)면 treats the condition as a trigger that automatically leads to the result. Think of it less like "if maybe" and more like "when/once X happens, then Y." For example, 밤이면 어두워요 (when it becomes night, it gets dark) isn't speculative—it's a fact. Korean speakers see conditions through this lens of automatic consequence, not uncertain possibility.

How to attach (으)면: If the verb or adjective stem ends in a consonant, add -으면. If it ends in a vowel, add -면. For example: 먹다 → 먹으면 (eat → when you eat), 가다 → 가면 (go → when you go), 크다 → 크면 (big → when it's big), 행복하다 → 행복하면 (happy → when happy).

How it works

  • Verb/Adjective stem + (으)면
  • Noun + 이면/면
