The (으)니까 grammar form expresses a reason or cause that logically leads to a consequence, but with a crucial difference from English causality. In English, we often think of cause-and-effect as separate, objective facts: "It's raining, therefore I brought an umbrella" treats the rain and the action as two distinct events. Korean (으)니까 operates differently—it expresses the speaker's immediate, firsthand reasoning at the moment of action. When you say 날씨가 추우니까 옷을 껴입었어요 (the weather is cold, so I put on warm clothes), you're not just stating a logical rule; you're expressing your lived experience of feeling the cold and then responding to it in real time.
This is why (으)니까 often feels more intimate and immediate than its English counterpart. English speakers tend to separate the reason from the action conceptually, but Korean bundles them together as a unified moment of perception-and-response. The (으)니까 clause doesn't merely explain; it recreates the causal logic as the speaker experienced it. This is also why (으)니까 works beautifully in commands and suggestions: 배가 고프니까 밥을 먹자 (since I/we are hungry, let's eat) doesn't just state hunger—it invokes the hunger as the immediate motivation for the shared action.
Another key insight: (으)니까 often suggests that the consequence is natural, expected, or directly observable from the cause. When you use it, you're saying the result follows obviously and immediately. This is subtly different from 때문에 (due to), which can feel more explanatory or formal, or -(으)므로, which feels more written and conditional. With (으)니까, the listener can sense the speaker's felt reasoning—the cause genuinely prompted this response.
