The pattern 아/어도 되다 (or 해도 되다) expresses that doing something is permitted, allowed, or acceptable. The core idea is: "even if you do X, it is okay/fine." This is fundamentally different from how English speakers typically think about permission.
Why this matters for English speakers: In English, we say "You *can* do this" or "You *may* do this" to grant permission. But Korean doesn't think about permission as something granted from outside—instead, it frames the situation as "the consequence of doing this action is acceptable." The 도 particle means "even" or "also," and 되다 means "to work/be okay/be possible." So 아/어도 되다 literally translates to "even if [you do X], it becomes okay." This is a mindset shift: rather than "I give you permission," it's "the result of this action being acceptable."
Another key difference: English distinguishes between "can" (ability) and "may" (permission). Korean 아/어도 되다 is specifically about acceptability and permission, not ability. The structure also works with negative contexts: 하지 않아도 된다 = "you don't have to do it / it's okay not to do it." This flexibility—saying what's acceptable whether you do something *or* don't do it—is not easily expressed in a single English structure, which shows how different the underlying logic is.
The pattern is extremely useful in daily Korean because it lets you express what's socially or logically acceptable in a situation, rather than imposing external rules.
